Local people should be empowered to create mixed-use urban villages when their suburban housing estates are revamped, according to a paper written by Conservative shadow small business and enterprise minister Mark Prisk. Drivers Jonas has relocated its Birmingham office to larger premises at Cornwall Court in the city core. The 36-strong team took up residence at the offices last week.
Improvement scheme for Lincoln

Designs for a multi-million pound improvement scheme for Lincoln's cultural quarter and city centre have been developed by architects LDA Design. The scheme involves major paving works to the High Street and improvements to pedestrian crossings and the streetscape. The project is being funded by Lincoln City Council and Lincolnshire County Council with contributions from the East Midlands Development Agency, Lincolnshire Enterprise and the EU. Jacobs Babtie is acting as lead engineer for delivering the project.
Peter Brett Associates wins award

Peter Brett Associates (PBA) has won an award from the Institution of Highways and Transportation (IHT) for its work on a home zone project in the centre of Chester. The project, which aims to transform a major suburb near Chester city centre, has been given the IHT's 2006 Environmental Award for the impact that it has had on the area. PBA worked with the Environment Partnership on the project's design, which was promoted by Cheshire County Council and Chester City Council.
London Metropolitan University to run masters course

A masters course in city regeneration will be run at London Metropolitan University from September this year. The course aims to tackle a critical shortage of skilled staff that has been heightened by the capital's growth and regeneration plans in the lead-up to the 2012 Olympic Games. It is designed to equip students with a thorough knowledge of the changes taking place in the social, economic and physical structure of cities and skills to work on projects with different communities.
Plans for Bradford site wins competition

Plans for a mixed-use public square overlooked by flats have won a major design competition for a key site in Bradford city centre. New Victoria Place won the contest held by Bradford Centre Regeneration for the city's Odeon site. The proposal, by Langtree Group, Artisan and Carey Jones Architects, envisages a public square, 250 apartments in four buildings, a hotel, office space and a cafe and restaurant facing the square.
Plans for Swansea's Tawe riverside

Plans to regenerate and preserve the heritage of Swansea's Tawe riverside corridor are to be scrutinised by the city council cabinet next week. The scheme, part of the Swansea Waterfront concept, aims to create a riverside urban area supported by transport improvements. Key proposals include renewing the Hafod Copperworks site and ensuring that the riverside corridor integrates the city centre with the SA1 development and the Liberty Stadium. If approved, the masterplan will go to full council to be adopted as planning guidance.
Scotland fund awards

Two community projects in Dundee have been awarded £475,000 by the Scottish Executive's Futurebuilders Scotland fund. The Dundee Drug and Aids Project is using its £300,000 grant to develop a purpose-built health and employment centre. An organisation supporting ethnic minorities in the city, Bharatiya Ashram, will get £175,000 to help fund its relocation and expansion.
Kier Sheffield awarded

Burngreave New Deal for Communities partnership has awarded Kier Sheffield a £3.9 million contract to refurbish a former Department of Social Security office, Sorby House, as a mixed-use property. Kier Sheffield is a partnership of construction contractor Kier Group and Sheffield City Council. The project is part of the redevelopment of Spital Hill, Ellesmere Green and the Vestry Hall, on which work has already begun.
