South West residents have until the end of the month to comment on the draft regional spatial strategy (RSS). The South West Regional Assembly is consulting on the document, which sets the regional context for planning until 2026 (Planning, 18 August, p3). The comments will help to inform discussions at the examination in public of the draft strategy next spring. The final strategy is expected in early 2008. Housing starts up by four per cent

Housing starts in the past 12 months were up by four per cent to 182,400 compared with the same period last year, latest DCLG figures show. There were also 165,400 completions, an increase of five per cent on last year. All regions bar the South West and London saw a boost in completions.
White Young Green to act as consultant for St Austell town centre

White Young Green is to act as environmental consultant on the redevelopment of St Austell town centre in Cornwall. The firm has been appointed by David McLean Developments and the South West of England Regional Development Agency to carry out a geotechnical assessment and associated site investigations for the £60 million mixed-use scheme. The redevelopment will create 14,000m2 of shops, a cinema, homes and a 600-space car park.
Government pledges cash for Cornish Coast project

The government pledged £4.5 million for a marine energy project 16km off the Cornish Coast this week. The Wave Hub scheme, headed by the South West of England Regional Development Agency, involves a deep-sea electricity socket that will act as giant extension cable, connecting four wave energy devices to the national grid. The £20 million scheme could provide three per cent of Cornwall's electricity needs.
Strathclyde Passenger Transport commissions MVA to carry out study

Strathclyde Passenger Transport has commissioned MVA to carry out the initial phases of the Glasgow conurbation public transport study. The study is aimed at providing a blueprint for public transport provision across the city and adjacent urban areas. MVA will assess the effectiveness of public transport provision and analyse the potential impact of planned land-use developments. The initial phases of the study are due to be completed in the autumn.
£11 million to be injected into Derbyshire projects

Almost £11 million is to be injected into three projects in Derbyshire to help regenerate the area. The East Midlands Development Agency has approved funding of £5 million for the £32.4 million Buxton Crescent and Thermal Spa scheme, which will restore listed buildings as a hotel and spa complex. The Roundhouse project in Derby, a £29 million scheme that will create a city centre campus for Derby College, will receive £4.5 million. Another £1.4 million will go towards the Business Innovation Centre in Westthorpe.
