Birmingham City Council's cabinet has backed proposals to set up a second business improvement district (BID) in the city centre. Businesses located within a BID pay a levy into a pot and can vote for how the cash is spent to improve the area. The scheme would expand Birmingham's current Broad Street BID across the city centre.

Edinburgh City Council and other local authorities in the Lothian region have teamed up to lobby for extra cash from the Scottish Executive to fund new affordable housing. Current levels of funding would provide 3,500 affordable homes a year over the next ten years, but the local authorities say 11,000 are required.
