Oriental City plans

30 June 2006

Proposals to redevelop Oriental City on Edgware Road in Colindale, north-west London, have been submitted to the London Borough of Brent by Development Securities. The £200 million plans for the 3ha site feature 27,000m2 of retail space, which have already attracted a major DIY retailer as a likely tenant. There will also be 30,600m2 of housing including 520 homes in a mix of tenures and a 7,200m2 primary school for 420 pupils.

Birmingham City Council's cabinet backs BID proposals

Birmingham City Council's cabinet has backed proposals to set up a second business improvement district (BID) in the city centre. Businesses located within a BID pay a levy into a pot and can vote for how the cash is spent to improve the area. The scheme would expand Birmingham's current Broad Street BID across the city centre.

Edinburgh City Council and other local authorities in the Lothian region have teamed up to lobby for extra cash from the Scottish Executive to fund new affordable housing. Current levels of funding would provide 3,500 affordable homes a year over the next ten years, but the local authorities say 11,000 are required.

Blackpool casino plans

Plans for a regional super casino in Blackpool went on public display this week. Urban regeneration company ReBlackpool has submitted a planning application for a conference centre, casino, hotel and spa and retail and leisure facilities. An exhibition based on the application was hosted with the Royal Institution of British Architect's mobile "Architruck" in the city's central car park.
