First energy strategy for West Midlands launched

10 December 2004

The first energy strategy for the West Midlands was launched last week to tackle climate change and promote energy efficiency. Just one per cent of electricity consumed in the region is generated from renewable sources and its energy use is estimated to emit around 42 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. The blueprint, produced by the regional assembly, Advantage West Midlands and the Government Office for the West Midlands, covers housing, energy efficiency, renewable energy, supply security and transport. A regional energy champion will be appointed to provide a voice on energy issues and create a regional energy office. The strategy aims to establish the West Midlands as a leading supplier of low-carbon goods and services.

Consultation on government funding for housing launched

10 December 2004

A consultation on government funding for housing during 2006-07 and 2007-08 was launched this week. The ODPM is seeking views on the regional split of the £5.5 billion, which includes an extra £500 million provided for social rented housing. The East of England will see an increase of around 50 per cent to reflect the planned increase in homes in growth areas. An increase of around 40 per cent is proposed for the South West to reflect the region's affordability problems. The northern region and the West Midlands will benefit from extra funding for housing renewal provided through the separate housing market renewal pathfinders. The consultation period ends on 4 February. Housing Investment in the Regions can be viewed via www.PlanningResource.co.uk.
