Designers have been chosen for a Glasgow pedestrian bridge that the city council hopes will act as a catalyst for the regeneration of the Tradeston area of the city. A group comprising engineer Atkins, its cost management subsidiary Faithful & Gould and architecture practice the Richard Rogers Partnership won a competition to design the bridge, called Neptune's Way.

The North-West Development Agency has pledged £2 million for developing a centre of excellence for manufacturing and technology in Burnley. Based on the former Michelin site, the centre will provide a base for up to 20 small and medium-sized firms with the aim of improving local start-up rates. It has already received £1.4 million from the European Regional Development Fund.

Car manufacturer Nissan will get a regional selective assistance package of £3.26 million, said industry minister Jacqui Smith last week. More than 250 Sunderland jobs will be secured by the grant, which accompanies a £95 million investment by Nissan in a new model, said the Department of Trade and Industry.
