A committee of MPs is to examine government policy for tackling the regional productivity gap. The inquiry, called by the Commons Treasury committee, will focus on progress towards achieving a cross-departmental public service agreement set out in the 2002 spending review. This states the government's aim of reducing "the persistent gap in growth rates between the regions". Issues that the committee will examine include the reasons for differing productivity levels and the effect of domestic and European spending on growth rates.

Birmingham City Council selected Countryside Properties as its preferred developer for the £100 million second phase of the Masshouse project this week. The 2.3ha City Park Gate scheme includes 522 flats, retail units and 12,000 sq m of office space. It will complement the first phase of Masshouse, a commercial-led mixed-use scheme designed by Ted Cullinan, and act as a gateway to the £6 billion Eastside project.

A £79 million funding package to regenerate Birmingham's Eastside area, believed to be the largest single regeneration project carried out by a regional development agency, was given the go-ahead by the government last week. Plans for a 30,000-seat stadium for Wimbledon Football Club in Milton Keynes have received the go-ahead from Milton Keynes Council. The mixed-use scheme by the MK Stadium Consortium also includes a supermarket, shops, offices and a hotel. The club will relocate there when it comes to the end of its two-year residency at the city's National Hockey Stadium.
