South Gloucestershire Council has appointed MVA to carry out an alternative study reviewing the case for a rapid transit system in the area. This follows last January's decision not to pursue an extension to the Bristol Supertram light rail scheme beyond Bristol Parkway Station to the Cribbs Causeway regional shopping centre. The study will refocus work on a range of rapid transit options in South Gloucestershire with the intention of developing a replacement scheme that can be submitted to the government.

Bristol City Council has selected Levitt Bernstein Associates (LBA) to advise on the redevelopment of the Colston Hall concert venue. The hall's transformation will include a foyer building, which will be linked to the venue. It will also see the provision of education and workshop spaces, rehearsal and recording facilities and bars and restaurants. The Colston Hall redevelopment team will work closely with LBA to ensure that the new building will complement the grade II listed 19th century hall.

A £500 million redevelopment of Bristol's Broadmead shopping centre that will create 2,000 jobs has been granted detailed planning permission. The application by the Bristol Alliance includes a department store, 108 other shops, housing and environmental improvements. Last week Bristol City Council also approved plans for harbourside headquarters for finance company Clerical Medical.

A riverside development in the Kelham Island conservation area in Sheffield has been granted planning permission by the city council. The proposal by developer Raven Group includes the demolition of former industrial sites to open out the River Don. Two single regeneration budget grant schemes totalling £2.5 million have been launched by Birmingham City Council to help businesses in the north-west of the city. Grants of up to £50,000 will be made available under the schemes to help prepare land for business development and to modernise existing premises. Around 450 businesses will benefit, creating 500 jobs and safeguarding a further 320.
