RTPI Comment - Planning rediscovered
17 December 2004
More than ever, planning is in the news. The recent Institute for Public Policy Research working paper Going for Growth questioned the government's priority for increasing the rate of economic growth in the South East. The London School of Economics housing team has criticised the lack of strategic planning in Thames Gateway and, particularly, the perceived missed opportunity of capitalising on the infrastructure already available in existing centres. New UDC needs to offer Thurrock a lasting future
17 December 2004
The new urban development corporation in Thurrock is a great opportunity to regenerate the area, but it must commit to sustainability, says Anne Cheale. The creation of an Urban Development Corporation (UDC) in Thurrock, one of the Thames Gateway's key growth areas, presents a golden opportunity to transform the quality of life of the borough's residents. Thurrock Council's Conservative Group, then in opposition, therefore supported the establishment of the UDC when it was first proposed last February, but not without reservations concerning the depth of its commitment to sustainability.

Quotes of the week
10 December 2004
"If I want my car to work I don't build my own engine. Many of the things that work best have been done successfully somewhere else. We don't need to constantly reinvent the wheel and play with people's lives." Institute of Community Studies director Geoff Mulgan speaking at the Urban Forum's annual conference in Gateshead this week.
