The official index to measure deprivation hides rural poverty, watchdog the Commission for Rural Communities has warned. It said that, while neighbourhood-scale areas in rural districts only accounted for 2.4 per cent of the worst fifth of Index of Multiple Deprivation scores, 17 per cent of households with less than 60 per cent of the median income were in rural areas.
