Mortgage repayments now comprise more than a fifth of the average working household's income, compared with less than 12 per cent in 1997, according to figures in Roof magazine published by charity Shelter. Its 2007 affordability index says that average monthly mortgage payments have risen from £304.80 to £827.87 over the past decade.
