The Department for Transport this week announced £63.4 million of funding through the Private Finance Initiative to allow Coventry City Council to upgrade more than 30,000 street lights. The council will now discuss with potential partners how the work will be undertaken.

Transport Scotland announces consortium as preferred bidder

The Scottish Government's transport agency Transport Scotland has announced a consortium comprising engineering consultancy Arup and Jacobs as its preferred bidder for a contract to manage the project to build a road and light rail bridge over the Firth of the Forth between Fife and Lothian. The contract is expected to be worth £100 million over the project's lifetime. See Analysis, p12.

Leeds councils appoint WS Atkins to review transport plan

The 11 councils that make up the Leeds city region have appointed consultancy WS Atkins to review the way in which transport is planned and delivered across the city region. WS Atkins will consider and evaluate options for transport governance in the city region, including potential future structures and powers, and the timing of any possible reform.

Capita Symonds wins contract for Birmingham library development

Consultancy Capita Symonds has been awarded a contract to manage the development of a major new library in Birmingham. The contract, awarded by Birmingham City Council, will see the company appointed for up to six years to manage all aspects of the building's development. The project is intended to bring a major boost to Birmingham's cultural facilities.

Southampton City Council appoints Connaught

Southampton City Council has appointed property services firm Connaught to provide housing improvements across the city over the next three years. The company will install new kitchens and bathrooms in some of the city's social homes and will also carry out electrical and heating upgrades in some properties.

Capacitybuilders appoints bodies to run national services

Umbrella bodies the National Council for Voluntary Organisations and the British Association of Settlements and Social Action Centres have been appointed by voluntary sector support agency Capacitybuilders to run two national services. NCVO will advise third sector bodies on responding to social change, while Bassac will advise on collaboration work.
