The number of local authority areas in which residents get the chance to decide how a "community kitty" will be spent in their neighbourhood is to more than double, communities secretary Hazel Blears has announced. She said that a further 12 councils will join the existing ten local authorities that are piloting the scheme.

Team of architects appointed to design arena

A team of architects has been appointed to design an arena which will host handball during the 2012 Olympic Games. Architectural practices Make Architects, PTW, and Ove Arup and Partners have been appointed by the Olympic Delivery Authority to design the facility, which will be transformed into a new multi-sports venue after the Games.

Consortium appointed to build tunnel under River Tyne

The Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority has appointed a consortium to part-finance, design and build a second tunnel for road traffic under the River Tyne. The new toll tunnel is expected to open in 2010, when the existing tunnel will close for refurbishment. The consortium, led by French firm Bouygues, will also maintain all the tunnels under the river for the next 30 years.

LDA renews contract with Think London

The London Development Agency has renewed its contract with direct investment agency Think London to attract foreign investment to the capital. Think London, which has had its present contract renewed for a further three years, helps foreign firms set up offices in the capital and encourages those already there to stay and grow.
