Faith, hope ... and scientific charity

In my meetings with apprentice community workers over many years, it's been interesting to note the shifting motivations. In the 1960s and 70s most young applicants said their motivation to work for social justice came from family convictions, either socialist or Christian. In the 1970s some Marxist community workers became too political and self destructed - they are mostly gone now; but I know of at least a dozen Christian clergy who live with the poor in Scotland's struggling housing estates. Some are impressive community leaders.

There was much celebrity swearing at the Way Ahead conference in Bristol where Tim Smit, the colourful boss of Cornwall's Eden Project, told delegates there to hear about the new South-West growth strategy that the constant pursuit of growth is "bullshit", dropping the F-word in at one point to ensure that the mild-mannered audience was listening.

Jo Edwards, 33, is a project architect at Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects (PTEA). She was responsible for the refurbishment of Brockwell Lido in Lambeth as well as larger regeneration projects in south London and Slough.

Hi-tech hub promotes business growth

The £5 million Quadrus Centre in South Tyneside provides high-tech workspace and support services for local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Run by the Tyneside Economic Development Company, the centre opened in May 2005. The centre aims to act as a "hub", helping enterprises to grow. Centre manager Tania Morrison answers our panel's questions.
