Regeneration News brief: Open day for former RAF Locking site takes place

An open day on redevelopment plans for the former RAF Locking site in Weston-super-Mare took place last week. Hundreds of residents and businesses were able to air their opinions on their preferred form of development at the 81ha site. South West of England Regional Development Agency development manager Chris Foley said: "This has been a great start to encourage a mix of employment, housing and community uses on the site."
Moves: Appointment at Arup

Melanie Griffin has joined consultancy Arup as an associate. She will be responsible for developing Objective 1 and 2 applications for a new airport, business park and a large industrial area, appraising structural fund applications and carrying out an economic impact assessment for a new stadium. Arup has also appointed Richard Crabtree as senior planner to work on a range of planning and transport policy.

Children's play facilities in Corfe Mullen, Dorset are set to be improved following the award of a £30,000 grant to Victoria Close Tenants and Residents Association. The Government's Living Spaces scheme has allocated £25,000, and an additional £5,000 has been awarded by East Dorset District Council. New equipment will be installed next spring.

Plans for a £31.5 million transformation and refurbishment of the Leeds Grand Theatre and adjoining Assembly Room have been submitted for consideration to Leeds City Council. The application seeks to make a number of alterations to the grade II* listed building, aimed at improving the theatre's auditorium by restoring its heritage and creating a comfortable, accessible environment for audiences.

A prominent residential and office development in St Mary's Gate has been granted planning permission by Sheffield City Council. Permission was originally granted for the city centre scheme last year to provide flats in a 19-storey tower with a seven-storey office block on the corner of St Mary's Gate and Moore Street. But an amended application was submitted after reappraisal of costs by the applicants. The latest application is for 205 flats and an additional floor on the tower.

Persimmon Homes has been appointed preferred developer to build the first 40 homes in Lightmoor Village, a mixed-use development in Telford planned by English Partnerships and the Bournville Village Trust. The first phase of development on the 72ha site owned by English Partnerships is expected to cost £8 million. Up to 800 homes are planned for Lightmoor Village, with at least 25 per cent earmarked as affordable spread throughout the site.

A state-of-the-art skatepark in central Manchester was opened last week. The park, on London Road beneath the Mancunian Way, includes a series of pipes and flat banks set in a replica street environment, although it is located away from residential areas. The skatepark cost £75,000 and was designed by consultancy Fearless, which drew up the proposal in consultation with skateboarders. It will be managed by Manchester City Council's leisure department.

Jon Ladd has been appointed to the advisory panel of the Canadian Brownfields Network (CBN). The British Urban Regeneration Association claims that the appointment of its chief executive underscores the association's commitment to developing partnerships with worldwide economic development organisations to share best practice internationally. The CBN is a network of built environment practitioners committed to supporting regeneration in Canada. It aims to promote urban revitalisation and the benefits of brownfield development.
