The Welsh Assembly Government must do more to stimulate demand for housing in the south Wales valleys, according to a think-tank report due next week. The Bevan Foundation's study will say that large areas of housing in the area suffer from low demand. It concludes that this can have a serious impact on people's housing mobility and wider regeneration. Marketing initiatives on housing are not co-ordinated or evaluated and low housing demand is given less priority than in England, it claims.

Law chambers 2 Mitre Court Buildings has lost a further planning barrister to another chambers. Robert Walton left last week to practise at 4-5 Gray's Inn Square. His move follows the departure of Neil King QC, Reuben Taylor and Rupert Warren, who all recently quit Mitre Court to join Landmark Chambers (Planning, 19 December 2003, p3).

The government is interfering with the housing market and making house buying more difficult, according to Tory housing spokesman David Curry. He accused the government of being "hopelessly ineffective where it should be most active". Plans for a seller's pack aimed at simplifying house buying would add more cost and bureaucracy, he claimed.

The public inquiry into Erewash Borough Council's local plan will start on 27 January and is set to last eight working days. The council says that a policy of continuous negotiation with objectors over the period from first deposit in 2001 to second deposit last year, together with published pre-inquiry changes, is responsible for the short length of the inquiry. The plan is due to be adopted later this year.

A campaign group opposing development at Llanishen Reservoir in Cardiff is objecting to a revised scheme for the site. The Reservoir Action Group has told Cardiff County Council that plans for 326 homes - reduced from 346 in the original application - will spoil the reservoir, part of the Nant Fawr wildlife corridor. The group also claims that the revised scheme does not leave enough of the reservoir available for sailing.

House prices in the UK have fallen, according to latest ODPM figures published this week. The average house price in November 2003 was £159,480, compared with £161,567 in October. England continues to have the highest average prices, followed by Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. London had the highest regional average at £241,385.

The mobile phone industry and the national parks lobby have signed an accord intended to pave the way for sensitively designed and located telecommunications masts to be built in the countryside. The agreement, signed this week by the Mobile Operators Association, the Association of National Park Authorities and the Association for Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, commits both sides to meeting once a year, producing new designs, using pre-application discussions and exploring the possibility of operators sharing masts.
