Developers started building 39 per cent fewer homes in the UK last month than a year ago, figures reveal. Data compiled by standards body the National House-Building Council shows 9,135 private sector new build registrations in January 2008 compared with 14,998 in January 2007.

Proposed tax incentives designed to encourage brownfield development would be ineffective, trade body the British Property Federation told the Treasury last week. In a letter, the BPF said that the proposed relief was "limited", with too many caveats to have any real effect.
