A panel has been launched to monitor lending to small firms. It will include officials from the Treasury, the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform and the Bank of England. It will liaise with high street banks on the availability, risk and cost of lending to small and medium-sized businesses.
Chairs of regional development agencies to have appointments extended

The chairs of seven of the nine regional development agencies will have their appointments extended by up to one year to ensure continuity, business secretary Lord Mandelson has announced. The London Development Agency and the East Midlands Development Agency will not be affected.
Royal Mail analysis results

Sunderland's business community has experienced the greatest level of growth this year, according to a Royal Mail analysis of UK business activity. It found that between March and August the number of firms in Sunderland increased by 2.16 per cent. Bolton and Dundee took second and third places respectively. Plans to rebuild primary schools given green light

Plans to rebuild and refurbish more than 1,500 primary schools in England were given the green light last week when the Department for Children, Schools and Families approved the school building strategies of 133 local authorities. The Government will provide £1.75 billion and councils £1.8 billion for the work.
