Plans approved to redevelop Haymarket station

Plans to redevelop of one of Tyneside's biggest Metro stations have been approved. Haymarket station, built in 1980, will be replaced with a four-storey glass and steel building. The £20 million complex will include office space, shops, a bar and a restaurant. Newcastle-based Closegate Developments will carry out and pay for the work. Construction work will begin next March and is expected to last 18 months.

An exhibition of plans for Durham city centre up to 2020 opened last week. The masterplan, which will be on display in Durham and at regional development agency One NorthEast offices in Newcastle, will run until 13 October. The vision looks at how Durham can realise its full economic potential while retaining its heritage and historic character. It envisages improving the range of shops and leisure and entertainment facilities, looking at the future of the city's university and the development of iconic buildings.
