Two new enterprise capital funds to be created

Two new enterprise capital funds, backed by over £40 million of government cash, will be created to help innovative small- and medium-sized enterprises grow. The £37.5 million Dawn Capital Fund will back pioneering technology in traditional industries, and the £30 million Midlands Enterprise Capital Fund will focus on investments in the Midlands.
Birmingham City Council's cabinet backs BID proposals

Birmingham City Council's cabinet has backed proposals to set up a second business improvement district (BID) in the city centre. Businesses located within a BID pay a levy into a pot and can vote for how the cash is spent to improve the area. The scheme would expand Birmingham's current Broad Street BID across the city centre.
Plans to transform Widnes Waterfront

Plans to transform Widnes Waterfront into a prime business location have been given a £5.6 million boost by the North-West Regional Development Agency. The investment aims to help Halton Borough Council bring more than 80ha of derelict land back into use over the next six years as part of the Widnes Waterfront masterplan. The project includes 104,000 sq metres of offices and light industrial space, public spaces, parkland and public art.
Department of Transport announces funding for cycling initiatives

The Department for Transport has announced £15 million of funding for cycling initiatives. The DfT aims to develop safer cycling routes to school and to raise children's cycling proficiency. The cash doubles the annual budget for Cycling England, a national body that coordinates the development of cycling across England, to £10 million a year.

Second phase of flagship new community in Telford

The 108-home second phase of a flagship new community in Telford is to be built out by housebuilder George Wimpey. Regeneration agency English Partnerships, which is promoting the scheme with joint venture partner the Bourneville Village Trust, has selected Wimpey to build the homes in Lightmoor Village to the 'excellent' Eco Homes environmental standard.
Architects appointed to design housing for the Heygate estate

Architects have been appointed to design some of the housing that will replace the concrete blocks of the Heygate estate in Elephant & Castle, London, when it is demolished in 2010. Southwark Council, using a panel of officers, residents and housing associations, chose Metaphorm Architecture and Design, Sarah Wigglesworth Architects, Featherstone Associates, KMK Architects, Haworth Tompkins Architects and Loates Taylor Shannon Architects.
The Olympic Delivery Authority appoints five legal firms

The body charged with delivering the Olympic Games has appointed five legal firms to form a legal panel to advise on procurement, planning, contract negotiation, infrastructure, transport and utilities issues. The Olympic Delivery Authority selected Berwin Leighton Paisner, Clifford Chance, DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Pinsent Masons to make up the panel.
Regeneration of Pall Mall in Liverpool to be designed by RHWL Architects

The mixed-use regeneration of the Pall Mall district in central Liverpool will be designed by RHWL Architects. RHWL won a competition run by the English Cities Fund to get the contract. The Pall Mall project will create 150,000 sq metres of mixed-use development in an area currently dominated by car parking.
DTZ appointed by Bristol City Council

Consultancy DTZ has been appointed by Bristol City Council to examine retail needs in the city in a study designed to help shape future planning and regeneration policy. It will be completed in the autumn, DTZ said.
