One of the most professional and effective groups focusing on the inclusion of black and minority ethnic people in economic development is the Black Training and Enterprise Group. Its annual conference last week focused on assessing the Government's performance regarding opportunities for BME communities in Britain. The group's chief executive, Jeremy Crook, put the case forcefully about the need for more ambitious approaches. BME businesses now employ more than half a million people and have a combined turnover that exceeds £90 billion. Despite this, there is a 15 per cent employment gap between white and BME people.
