Would you rather have your bins emptied by an international contractor or a small enterprise run by members of your local community? Most people probably wouldn't be that bothered, as long as collections were made tidily and on time. Yet you could be better off with the local service provider. Its profits are more likely to be spent locally, benefiting the local economy generally. And, as local residents, its employees have an extra reason to want to provide a good service.
