City dwellers need help to age in situ

A century ago, Ebenezer Howard posed the question in his famous three magnets diagram: the people, where will they go? The magnets were town, country and what he called 'town-country', or garden cities. We are still asking that question. And researchers from the University of Newcastle have found that, for older people, the answer is stark: they're heading out of the city into the countryside.
Faith brings more healing than harm

Among my recent holiday reading was The End of Faith by Sam Harris, who argues that religious practice is at best a waste of time, at worst catastrophic in its applications to the modern age. He is particularly exercised by Islam. He pooh-poohs the oft-vaunted idea that Islam is essentially peaceful, quoting a raft of gruesome exhortations against unbelievers from the Koran. Fundamentalism and terrorism are not perversions of Islam, he argues, but its logical consequences.
