Barrow redevelopment

The North-West Regional Development Agency has provided £5 million to enable urban regeneration company West Lakes Renaissance to acquire land needed to redevelop the port area of Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria. The 40ha of land belonged to Associated British Ports, Barrow Borough Council and Cumbria County Council. The move is the first step in a masterplan for the redevelopment of Barrow.
Academy awarded

An academy that encourages firms to help improve deprived areas has been awarded £230,000 over two years by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. The Partnership Academy was set up by charity Business in the Community to run its national business brokers programme. Brokers encourage firms to work with the community and voluntary sector to tackle deprivation.
Knowsley scheme funded

A scheme in Knowsley that aims to get 3,000 people on incapacity benefit back into work has been handed £1 million from the Government's Northern Way growth programme. The money will fund a new outreach centre to help long-term claimants of the benefit. One goal of the Northern Way is to get 100,000 benefit claimants back into work by 2014.
West Rhyl project funded

A project designed to reclaim the streets of west Rhyl in north Wales is to receive £154,000 from good causes distributor the Big Lottery Fund's Voluntary and Community Sector programme. The project, run by the West Rhyl Community Company, aims to reduce the fear of crime and social isolation in the town.
