Compulsory purchase order enables redevelopment

A compulsory purchase order to enable the redevelopment of the Eastgate and Harewood quarter of the city has been agreed by Leeds City Council. The order will help assemble the site, which is split into a number of ownerships, to ensure the progression of a major retail scheme. Developers Hammersons and Town Centre Securities are working with the local authority to transform 8.5ha of land with a John Lewis department store, additional shops, flats, a cinema and car parking.
Quantum Property Partnership chosen

The Quantum Property Partnership has been chosen to partner the South West of England Regional Development Agency (SWERDA) in creating a £300 million science park at Emersons Green in Bristol. The joint venture between Quintain Estates and Development PLC and Morley Fund Management will help build and fund the SPark project, a partnership between SWERDA and the Universities of Bristol, Bath and the West of England. Planning permission has been granted for 77,000m2 of floor space and construction work is scheduled to start next spring.
Artisan submits plans

Urban regeneration firm Artisan has submitted plans for its first project outside the North West. The £20 million mixed-used scheme in Sheffield city centre comprises 132 flats over ten storeys, retail space and car parking. The site, adjacent to the River Don at the junction of Blonk Street and Wicker Street, would also house a £13 million 6,503m2 office scheme being developed by Priority Sites. The building has been designed by Aedas Architects.
Redevelopment of Selby town centre receives green light

The £16 million redevelopment of Selby town centre has received the green light after the secretary of state decided not to call in the application. The Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber confirmed last week that developer Dransfield Properties can progress with plans to extend the town's Market Cross shopping centre. The scheme also involves relocating a Victorian primary school and replacing it with a purpose-built facility, a nursery and a 438-space car park.
Two cultural projects secured

Two cultural projects have secured more than £60 million from the Northwest Development Agency. National Museums Liverpool will receive £32.7 million to develop the Museum of Liverpool in the city's world heritage site. Another £30 million has been confirmed for a media enterprise zone in Greater Manchester. The zone forms a key part of the BBC's proposals to relocate a significant proportion of its commissioning and production activity to the region.
Mixed-use redevelopment granted planning approval

The 9,300m2 mixed-use redevelopment of a building formerly occupied by Bristol City Council planners has been granted planning approval. CSJ Planning Consultants has worked with developer Westmark on the scheme to demolish the 1950s Cabot House block to make way for offices, flats and shops. The building is located alongside Council House, close to Bristol Cathedral and the Central Library. It has been vacant for more than ten years.
Plans for the development of Leeds

Plans for the development of Leeds were presented to the public this week as the latest consultation step in the city centre area action plan. The plan, started last year, is due to be adopted in 2008. The city council is asking people what they think about a range of issues including the overall aims and direction of the city centre, access, design, conservation, entertainment, retail, housing and growth.
Plans to create a science park in Leicester moves step closer

Plans to create a science park in Leicester moved a step closer after the demolition of an old school on the site. The removal of John Ellis School will help to bring forward a 10ha scheme near the National Space Centre. Leicester City Council owns the land and is clearing it with financial support from the East Midlands Development Agency. Outline planning permission has already been granted for 11,150m2 of floor space on the site to accommodate hi-tech businesses.
