Initial studies for the Bankside 4 site

Initial studies for the Bankside 4 site redevelopment bordering the Tate Modern gallery in south London are to be carried out by Richard Rogers Partnership (RRP). The company was appointed by Clan Real Estate and developer Grosvenor to carry out the work. Native Land, a 50 per cent shareholder in Clan Real Estate with Buccleuch Properties, is managing the project for the joint venture. RRP will look at ways to bring the site forward.

The London Borough of Tower Hamlets commissions JMP Consulting

The London Borough of Tower Hamlets has commissioned JMP Consulting to carry out the strategic assessment of three cycle routes as part of the London Cycle Network. The longest route extends east-west across the borough, connecting the City of London with the Lea Valley. The other routes link Victoria Park to the boundary of the London Borough of Newham. JMP will examine each link to identify existing problems and to determine improvements or alternative routes to provide a safe and attractive means of travel.

Atkins appointed

Atkins has been appointed to carry out a major upgrade on resignalling and infrastructure facilities on railway track in and around Basingstoke. The company has signed a three-year contract with Network Rail covering the design, installation and commissioning of a signal control centre and 185 signals along almost 100km of track. The project forms part of Network Rail's broader programme of resignalling works, which will help to improve the performance, safety and cost efficiency of the railway infrastructure.

Plans to boost the speed of the Virgin Trains Pendolino service from 125mph to 135mph on some West Coast Main Line sections were unveiled this week. Sir Richard Branson said that Virgin intends to prequalify for the expanded CrossCountry franchise in 2007 and pledged to run trains every 20 minutes between London and Manchester, an hourly London to Glasgow service and more trains between London and north Wales.
