Appointment at London Development Agency

Arup director Peter Head has been appointed to work with the London Development Agency on plans for a zero-carbon development in the capital. The scheme is likely to be situated in the Thames Gateway and is intended to demonstrate that major developments can achieve low carbon emissions at standard costs. The project stems from an original proposal put forward by Greenpeace.

National waste strategy for Ireland

A national waste strategy for Ireland, drawn up by RPS, has been adopted by the Irish government. The strategy sets a target of diverting 1.8 million tonnes of organic waste a year away from landfill by 2016. It sets out objectives for the contributions that each of the suggested measures will make to achieving the 2016 target.

Research services division launched by TPi

A research services division has been launched by Transportation Planning International (TPi) to meet demand and growth in the social research area. TPi-RS will be headed by Jennie Hall, previously a principal consultant at Social Research Associates. The facility aims to offer the quality of a major research agency. The company's research and consultation skills are already employed in a range of sectors, including private businesses, central government agencies and departments and major international transportation providers.

Scott Wilson chosen

Scott Wilson has been chosen to identify the role that Milton Keynes and North Bucks Chamber of Commerce can play in the growth of Milton Keynes. The project was awarded to the consultancy following its work on business plans for the Milton Keynes Partnership Committee, the vehicle in charge of delivering 35,000 homes by 2016, and with the Universities for Milton Keynes Partnership setting out a case for establishing a university in the town.

Linklaters advised WBD

Linklaters has advised Wilson Bowden Developments (WBD) on a redevelopment agreement for Barnsley Markets. The contract will see a 46,450m2 market and retail development with catering, leisure, housing and car parking built to replace existing facilities. WBD owns 90 per cent of the 1249 Regeneration Partnership, which was chosen as the preferred developer to regenerate the markets. The remaining ten per cent is owned by companies in the Ashcroft and Guildhouse groups. Barnsley has one of the biggest markets in the north of England and the project is the cornerstone of the town's urban renaissance programme.
