East Riding of Yorkshire Council criticised

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has been criticised for refusing to pay compensation for offering inaccurate advice about removing an agricultural condition on a property. Local government ombudsman Anne Seex issued her first report on the case in 2005, recommending that the local authority pay compensation for lost value on the property assessed by the district valuer. The council refused, which led to Seex issuing a second report. East Riding has refused to accept the findings and insisted that the matter should be resolved in court.
Inquiry into DEFRA's proposals

An inquiry into DEFRA's proposals for a marine bill is to be held by the Commons environmental audit committee, it announced this week. The inquiry will look at what should be included in the bill and investigate marine planning, fisheries management, conservation and licensing for marine activities.
National House Buidling Council updates its code of conduct

The National House Building Council has updated its code of conduct for house builders in response to an increased focus in the industry on customer satisfaction. The customer service code features 15 key points on which builders should focus, including customer charters, staff training, a commitment to deliver on customer satisfaction targets, complaints procedures and after-sales care. Green infrastructure plan for the Harlow area

A green infrastructure plan for the Harlow area was released by an ODPM-led steering group this week. It provides information on 310km2 of land in Essex and Hertfordshire to help planners understand the wider implications of changing land use. The plan examines green infrastructure, highlights current archaeological, historical and cultural assets and sets out strategic projects and priorities. Mixed-use scheme at Stockwell Green in South London

A mixed-use scheme covering more than 1ha at Stockwell Green in South London was granted permission last week. The development will create more than 8,000m2 of commercial office space, 290 homes, a health centre and up to 400 jobs. It will also feature an underground car park with 131 spaces for vehicles and bikes. Hepher Dixon acted as planning consultant.
Jackson Construction will build millennium community

Jackson Construction will build the UK's second millennium community in King's Lynn, Norfolk. The £10.5 million project for Morston Assets will form part of the Nar Ouse regeneration area. The scheme involves 109 sustainable timber-frame houses, ranging from one-bedroom apartments to five-bedroom homes, and is scheduled for completion next spring.
Planners are to carry out a review of historic or architectural importance

Planners are to carry out a review of Gloucester's areas of historic or architectural importance, the city council announced this week. The review will look at the city's 11 conservation areas, which the council contends no longer reflect the different character sectors of the city. The work will involve redrawing boundaries and could see the creation of a conservation area around Cromwell Street, former home of murderer Fred West.
