The debate about whether authentic voluntary organisations should be separated from those that concentrate on delivering public services has recently resurfaced in the press. Reference was made to a major 1993 research study, Voluntary Action, which raised this issue forcibly more than a decade ago.

Now for an update from the Scottish Parliament, where earlier this month a wooden roof beam came loose in the middle of a debate, forcing the suspension of parliamentary business (R&R, 10 March, p56). MSPs are currently expected to be out of Holyrood's debating chamber for another two months, as engineers work to patch up the roof.

David Ireland, 38, is a policy adviser at campaign group the Empty Homes Agency. As well as helping local authorities to develop strategies for dealing with empty homes , Ireland liaises with central government and works on environmental projects.

Residents of the Jam Factory, a former preserves factory recently converted into a block of flats in Bermondsey, south London, have set up a website to act as a means of community cohesion. The building comprises 200 flats, and of its 350 residents, approximately 270 have now signed up to www.myjamfactory.com. The project's creator Marcus Greenwood answers our panel's questions.
