1. Think ahead. "Don't wait until a resource is threatened," says Mark Jones, of Newham campaign group Friends of Queen's Market. "Get the local community interested beforehand - it makes it a lot harder for plans to be steamrollered through." Once a planning application has been lodged, just 21 days are given for written submissions.
