Work starts on Manchester's urban water park

Work has started on Manchester's first urban water park, the centrepiece of the New Islington millennium community. The 1.6ha park, designed by landscape architects Grant Associates and engineers Martin Stockley Associates, includes islands, decking, boardwalks, bridges, a boating lake framed by a reed bed, a beach and a community orchard. The lake will feed into canal fingers leading to New Islington's quayside developments and a pedestrian route will create a link between the Rochdale and Ashton Canals. The park is scheduled to be open to the public in summer 2007.

Construction starts on observation wheel in York

Construction work has started on an observation wheel in York designed to attract up to one million visitors a year. Located at the National Railway Museum, the Yorkshire Wheel will measure 54m high and 50m across. Its 42 capsules will each accommodate eight people and offer views across the city and the countryside beyond. The attraction will open on 7 April.
