First phase of Kent Thameside transit system opens

The first phase of a bus rapid transit system for Kent Thameside opened this week. Around half of the Fastrack routes operate on dedicated busways with a further 25 per cent on reserved lanes alongside traffic on regular roads. The 15km route links Dartford and Gravesend via Bluewater and Greenhithe. The system has been installed ahead of the developments that it is intended to serve. Work on the second phase began this week.

Search begins for developer for Swindon redevelopment

A search for a developer for the £300 million redevelopment of a key site in Swindon began this week. The New Swindon Company is looking for a partner to develop the Exchange, a 7ha site between the railway station and the central business district. It is one of seven regeneration areas in the town centre. The plans include 60,000m2 of office space, between 300 and 400 homes, 40,000m2 of retail space and leisure facilities and a 200-bed hotel.
Mixed-use scheme proposed for mills complex in Burnley

A £10 million mixed-use scheme has been proposed on an historic canalside mills complex in Burnley. Developer St Modwen plans to restore and convert the 19th century Healey Royd and Finsley Gate mills into homes and commercial space. Land surrounding the Healey Royd site, south of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, has been earmarked for 65 houses and flats, workshops, a village green and a canalside footpath. Finsley Gate mill, on the northern bank of the canal, is to be converted into a retail factory outlet, offices, workshops and studio space.
