Newham Council expected to choose Countryside Properties

Newham Council was expected to choose developer Countryside Properties to construct the first phase of an 8,000-home regeneration of Canning Town in the east London borough after Regeneration & Renewal went to press. Council officers had recommended that Countryside be asked to build 600 homes and a school in advance of a council cabinet meeting this week. The other bidders were property group Lend Lease and consortium Ecentral.

Masterplan for first phase of Lancaster Canal regeneration

A masterplan for the first phase of the regeneration of the Lancaster Canal is to be prepared by consultancies Edaw and Arup after their appointment by canal agency British Waterways. The masterplan will focus on a stretch of the canal between Kendal and Natland Road in Cumbria. British Waterways said the scheme would act as a catalyst for the restoration of the canal's 14-mile Northern Reaches section.

Consultancy Urbed and Glenn Howells Architects chosen

Consultancy Urbed and Glenn Howells Architects have been chosen as urban design advisers for central Bradford's regeneration. They will help urban regeneration company Bradford Centre Regeneration implement architect Will Alsop's masterplan.

Work to improve targeting of rural regeneration funding

Work to improve the targeting of rural regeneration funding in the North-West will be assisted by environmental consultancy Tep after its appointment by the region's government office. Tep will develop a new public benefit assessment model aimed at ensuring funding goes to areas with the greatest need.

Olympic-sized swimming pool to be built in Sunderland

An Olympic-sized swimming pool in Sunderland will be built by construction firm Balfour Beatty. Apart from a 50-metre pool, the development will contain a fitness centre that will form part of a city-wide network of such centres, the city council said. The scheme is being partly financed through the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.

Appointment at RegenCo

Alan Knight has been appointed as deputy chief executive and development director at urban regeneration company RegenCo. The URC is charged with transforming West Bromwich and its adjoining areas of Smethwick and Hill Top. Knight joins from developer Cala Properties, where he was development director.

Appointment at Cross London Rail Links

Douglas Oakervee is to head Cross London Rail Links, the company responsible for the £16 billion Crossrail project to build a new east-west link across London. He will work for the firm on a part-time basis. He will also continue as project director of the civil engineering aspects of the planned Shellhaven port development in Thurrock, Essex.

North Hertfordshire District Council has appointed Alan Davey as housing strategy and renewals manager. He replaces Nick Wright, who is now development manager for North Staffordshire Homes.
