In December I was impressed and disturbed by a piece in the Guardian by the writer and Hackney resident Hari Kunzru. It explained how long-established and popular tradespeople in the east London borough, among them Tony, an Italian cafe owner, and Spirit, the proprietor of a Caribbean food store, had their businesses taken from them, in effect, by Hackney council. Having leased their premises from the council for years, they fell victim to the council's mysterious £72 million financial shortfall.
