DEFRA freezes grant

The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority said that it will be forced to freeze or reduce the budgets for a number of its projects to achieve savings after the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs froze its grant. The £4.9 million grant the national park authority received in 2005/06 will remain at the same level for the next two financial years.

Regeneration of Shoreditch to continue

The culture-led regeneration of Shoreditch in east London is to continue with the construction of 1,393sq metres contemporary visual arts building to house the Institute of International Visual Arts. Rivington Place will be built by Blenheim House Construction using architects Adjaye Associates, and will include exhibition space, a library and learning area. Funders include Barclays Bank and the Arts Council.

Homes to be built for Broomfield Hospital staff

Three hundred key worker homes planned for staff at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, Essex, are to be built by developer Galliford Try. The company won the contract, worth £18.2 million, from Swan Housing Group and expects the homes to be completed by March 2008.

Organisations win contracts to provide scheme for TimeBank

Organisations in five English cities have won contracts to provide a refugee mentoring scheme for charity TimeBank, expanding the service previously only provided in Birmingham, London and Glasgow. Leeds Library, the Northern Refugee Centre in Sheffield, Sova Cardiff, Bristol Volunteer Centre and the North of England Refugee Service in Newcastle all won tenders to aid the integration and prospects of refugees.

Review of Cheltenham to be carried out by DPDS

A review of whether a lack of retail and leisure facilities in Cheltenham are hindering the town's economic development will be carried out by consultancy DPDS. The firm will assess the need for more shops, possible development sites and the town's success in bringing in visitors.

Regeneration scheme in Shepherd's Bush to be built by Wilmott Dixon

A 113-home regeneration scheme in Shepherd's Bush, London will be built by housebuilder Wilmott Dixon after winning the contract from Cirle Anglia housing association. The brownfield development, on Ducane Road, will provide 46 affordable homes for rent and 31 homes for shared ownership sale, as well as six commercial units.

Appointment at Transport for London

London mayor Ken Livingstone has announced the appointment of Peter Hendy as the Commissioner of Transport for London. Hendy will take charge of public transport body Transport for London and lead major investment and improvement in transport services across the capital. Hendy was appointed as Transport for London's managing director of surface transport in 2001.

Appointment at Unity Trust Bank

Unity Trust Bank has appointed Heather Brown as banking operations director. She will be responsible for ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory standards and helping to deliver the bank's corporate strategy. Brown joins from HFC Bank, where she held a similar post.
