Manchester shoppers will be able to travel to the Trafford Centre by water taxi. Last week Trafford Borough Council granted planning permission for a 600m inlet linking the site with the Manchester Ship Canal. Building work should take around a year, but no start date has yet been agreed. Trafford Centre owner Peel Holdings said that the canal is part of a wider plan to develop a site opposite the centre.

A four-week consultation on the draft masterplan for Tattenhoe Park near Milton Keynes began yesterday. Led by Milton Keynes Partnership, the project will provide more than 1,200 homes, 30 per cent of which will be affordable. Around a third of the homes will be "super flexible" and built with future extension or adaptation in mind. A primary school, community facilities, business space and open areas are also proposed on the 57ha site. The masterplan, prepared by Savills and Alan Baxter and Associates, will be submitted later in the year.

Bedford town centre is set to be revived

Bedford town centre is set to be revived after the borough council signed an agreement with St Modwen for a £150 million redevelopment scheme. Plans for the 5.6ha site on the west side of the town centre include a bus station, large-scale food store, major department store, cinema and leisure complex. Around 18,500m2 of retail and leisure space is proposed, as well as 1,200-space car park, homes and open space.

Steering group of Scottish organisation has been set up

A steering group of Scottish organisations has been set up to discuss how to maximise Scotland's benefit from the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The group, which met for the first time last week, includes VisitScotland, BBC Scotland, Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Chambers of Commerce. It is chaired by former Olympic athlete Julia Bracewell and is part of the Nations and Regions Group that aims to help the whole of the UK benefit from the Olympics.
