The Scottish Executive has approved an additional £48 million to help housing associations across Scotland provide affordable homes. The cash, from housing and regeneration agency Communities Scotland, will be used to pay for the purchase of sites on which affordable housing will be built, and to bring forward housing projects.
Ireland Social Development package

Northern Ireland's Department for Social Development has announced a £4.75 million, four-year funding package to regenerate a housing estate on the northern side of Ballymena. The funding will pay for improvements to the Dunclug estate's housing stock and street lighting, and the provision of a new play-park and additional police community support officers on the estate.
Lottery merger

The merger of good causes distributors the New Opportunities Fund and the Community Fund into the Big Lottery Fund has been rubber-stamped. An order to formalise the merger - and dissolve the Community Fund, the NOF and the Millennium Commission - completed its parliamentary passage last week.

Crest Nicholson appointed

National regeneration agency English Partnerships and the Bournville Village Trust have appointed Crest Nicholson to develop a £33 million mixed-use central area for Lightmoor Village in Telford, Shropshire. The 72ha village is being developed on the same principles as the original Bournville Village model, with a restaurant and shops surrounding a central square, as well as 220 homes.
