English universities to have access to research funds

English universities will have access to £60 million a year to pay for applied research with commercial potential, chancellor Gordon Brown, announced last week in his pre-Budget report speech. Government announces provisional payments

The Government has announced provisional payments of £28.8 million to enable regional planning bodies and local planning authorities in England to improve their planning services. The 2007-08 Planning Delivery Grant cash also includes funding of £100,000 for each of nine local authorities participating in housing market renewal projects. Architecture firm Llewelyn Davies Yeang has been appointed to masterplan a Thames Gateway site, which they say will hold 1,000 homes. The contract was handed over by the Thurrock site's new owners: Family Mosaic Housing Association, the East of England Development Agency and Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation.

The London Development Agency picks Dialogue

The London Development Agency this week picked communications company Dialogue to handle the public consultation for plans to regenerate the 80ha Crystal Palace Park in the south-east of the city. Dialogue will be charged with ensuring that park users who usually steer clear of regeneration consultation have an opportunity to make their views known.

Consultancy support services appointed for M25 project

Consultancy support services for a project to widen the M25 motorway has been awarded to a joint venture between Hyder Consulting and planning design and management firm Halcrow. Hyder/Halcrow has been appointed to assist trunk roads agency the Highway Agency before and after the M25DBFO (design, build, finance and operate) contract for the road widening is awarded in 2008.

Urban Splash and Priority Sites awarded contract

Developers Urban Splash and Priority Sites are to create 10,700 sq metres of business space on a 31ha former tannery site after they were awarded a contract by the South-West of England Regional Development Agency. Both firms hope to be able to start construction in late spring next year, with the first buildings ready for occupation by the end of 2007.
