Planning launched a dedicated job website this week. Planningjobs.co.uk is a development of Haymarket Publishing's jobs.planningresource.co.uk website. It has been specifically designed for those working in planning, housing and regeneration. Planning professionals can use the site to store their CVs and apply for advertised jobs.

Replacement housing figures for Northampton issued for consultation

Replacement housing figures for Northampton in the draft East Midlands regional spatial strategy have been issued for consultation. The proposals recommend that 31,500 homes should be built between 2001 and 2021 in the Northampton implementation area and a further 8,875 between 2021 and 2026. These replace figures that were quashed by the High Court in January due to an error by the secretary of state.

Joint commitments with the Academy for Sustainable Communities have been signed by 11 organisations

Joint commitments with the Academy for Sustainable Communities have been signed by 11 organisations including the RTPI and the Town and Country Planning Association to help boost skills. The statements commit the bodies to drawing up a set of action plans to share skills, knowledge and resources for sustainable communities. Other groups include the Chartered Institute of Housing, Constructing Excellence, the Prince's Foundation and the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Second reading of Greater London Authority Bill passed this week

The second reading of the Greater London Authority Bill was passed by MPs this week, with a 169 majority in favour of devolving powers from Whitehall to City Hall. The bill will see more planning and housing powers for London mayor Ken Livingstone. A DCLG consultation paper on city development companies was also published this week to bring the private and public sectors together to boost economic development across city-regions.

Gazeley UK and Land Securities makes first payment to Milton Keynes Partnerships

Gazeley UK and Land Securities made the first infrastructure tariff payment to the Milton Keynes Partnerships this week. The companies said that their payment of more than £900,000 will go towards infrastructure and development for the town. It represents the first instalment of an estimated £18.3 million expected from joint partners over the next 15 years.

Office of Fair Trading calls for competition inquiry into BAA

The prospect that airport operator BAA could be broken up emerged this week after the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) called for a competition inquiry. The OFT said that it intends to refer BAA to the Competition Commission after it found evidence of poor customer satisfaction and high charges. BAA owns airports at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Southampton in the South East as well as in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. The OFT warned that the significant planned investment in airports in the South East could be inefficient without competition.

Scheme for business space and community facilities agreed as part of major riverside development in Medway

A £1 million scheme for business space and community facilities has been agreed as part of a major riverside development in Medway. This week Medway Council endorsed the inclusion of the community enterprise hub project as part of the larger Strood Riverside development and agreed to contribute up to £300,000. The scheme would convert railway arches into offices for small businesses and voluntary and community organisations.

Extra retail space could be added to Lakeside retail basin

An extra 93,000m2 of retail space could be added to the Lakeside retail basin area under proposals from the Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation. A study commissioned by the corporation indicates that extra shops could be built in the basin without adversely affecting other areas in the South East. Lakeside could have more than 371,000m2 of retail space by 2021, supporting 4,000 jobs. The final round of public consultations will be completed shortly with a view to adopting the masterplan in the new year.
