Plans submitted for Wolverhampton development

Plans for Wolverhampton's £67 million i54 development have been submitted to the city council and South Staffordshire Council. Regional development agency Advantage West Midlands, which owns the Wobaston Road site, lodged the application last week. It hopes to transform 89ha of brownfield land next to the M54 into a major employment site, creating around 6,000 mainly hi-tech jobs by 2020. Planning approval is expected by spring next year.
Plans submitted for Middlehaven masterplan

Plans for a £70 million college have been submitted for approval as part of Tees Valley's Middlehaven masterplan. The Middlesbrough College proposal envisages a five-storey block to house 17,000 students and 1,000 staff.
Appointment at Urban Living

Urban Living, the Birmingham and Sandwell housing market renewal pathfinder, has appointed David Seviour as chairman of its delivery board. Seviour, group chief executive of the LHA-ASRA Group, took up the post earlier this month. He said it is a privilege to help spearhead one of the country's most ambitious regeneration initiatives. The pathfinder area extends north-west from Birmingham into the adjoining borough of Sandwell and has a population of around 150,000.
Inquiry announced into future of coastal towns

An inquiry into the future of coastal towns is to be conducted by the Commons ODPM select committee, it was announced last week. The study will look at work done by the ODPM to tackle social, housing and environmental problems experienced in coastal towns. It will also examine the success of regional development agencies in supporting and developing coastal economies and whether there is a case for more regional initiatives. The deadline for written evidence is 30 January 2006.
St George named as developer for Ealing

St George has been named as the preferred developer to build a retail and housing development to help transform and rejuvenate Ealing town centre in west London. The borough council will enter into detailed negotiations with the firm before signing a deal to regenerate the Dickens Yard site behind Ealing Town Hall. The council wants the firm to focus on improving the overall designs for the scheme to ensure a development that will attract high-quality retailers to the area.
Casella Stanger to carry out restoration work

The restoration of South Marine Park in South Shields is to be carried out by Casella Stanger, a specialist division of Bureau Veritas. South Marine Park is part of a 4km stretch of parkland along the South Tyneside coast. The project, backed by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will reintroduce a bandstand feature, restore the terrace and lake, install lighting, a children's play area, footpaths and furniture and involve substantial tree, shrub and herbaceous planting.
Newport Unlimited publishes annual review

Newport Unlimited has published its annual review. The urban regeneration company, created in 2002, has been working on a 20-year vision to revamp the city. In the past year a city-wide transport plan has been adopted, infrastructure has been laid for an office district in George Street and developer Modus Corovest has been placed in charge of a £200 million city centre retail scheme. Chairman Grant Watson said that the approval of a stretch of M4 motorway to the south of the city will stimulate investment.
Padiham to benefit from funding

A major renewal programme in Padiham, Lancashire, is set to benefit from up to £1 million in funding from the Northwest Development Agency. The area is being regenerated through the Padiham Life initiative to reposition itself as a thriving market town. The scheme will create 50 jobs, provide 32 learning opportunities, support 39 existing businesses and create a further eight commercial concerns.
