DIFA tower secures CABE support

The proposed DIFA tower in London secured the support of the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) this week. The Kohn Pedersen Fox-designed scheme on Bishopsgate will be the tallest of the current wave of tower proposals in the City of London. CABE praised the "striking and potentially beautiful" architecture of the proposal and the way it relates to the skyline. But it stressed that design standards should be safeguarded throughout the planning process.
Plans submitted for Cardiff Bay office scheme

A blueprint for a £130 million office scheme in Cardiff Bay has been submitted by Morley Fund Management. The waterfront development will comprise 65,000m2 of office space with parking facilities on 2.6ha of vacant land. The developers hope to create around 5,000 jobs. The site is part of a £115 million portfolio owned by Norwich Union Life Funds.
Study into service delivery choice in isolated areas

The government's agenda to create more service delivery choice in isolated areas is to be investigated by the Commission for Rural Communities. The study will cover implications for rural transport, service provision funding and whether the private sector will help to meet costs. It will take an overview of issues for service users and providers and will look in detail at policies for secondary schools and health care. The investigation should be complete by next summer.
Appointment at the Arts Council

Chris Murray has been appointed lead adviser of sustainable communities and the built environment for the Arts Council. He will chair a panel of experts aiming to bring sustainability in line with the council's nine other policy areas. Murray, director of learning and development at the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, is on secondment as interim chief executive of the Academy for Sustainable Communities.
Initiative launched by Town and Country Planning Association

A trans-national community participation initiative was launched by the Town and Country Planning Association this week. The European Commission-funded Advocacy, Participation and Non-Governmental Organisations in Planning project will seek to improve public involvement in regional planning across north-west Europe by highlighting participation techniques and case studies.
Plans approved for bridge over River Aire

Plans for a pedestrian bridge across the River Aire in Castleford were approved by Wakefield City Council this week. The 131m bridge, part of Channel 4's Castleford Project television series following the regeneration of the West Yorkshire town, was designed by Renato Benedetti to provide a focal point for the town.
