Morecambe hotel revamped

The grade II*-listed Art Deco Midland Hotel in Morecambe is to be bought back to life with the aid of a £4 million grant from the North-West Regional Development Agency. Developer Urban Splash, which owns the freehold to the building, will create a 46-bedroom hotel with a public cafe bar, restaurant and bathhouse. A bid for £600,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund has already been submitted. The redevelopment of the hotel is a crucial part of the masterplan to regenerate the central seafront area of Morecambe. Urban Splash is also talking to Lancaster City Council about developing the adjacent promenade. A planning application for the hotel restoration has already been approved and work should start early next year.

A new website to attract European businesses to the East Midlands went online last week. The East Midlands Development Agency has developed the site to attract inward investment. It includes news and events, interactive maps and access to business support. The site is at www.englandseastmidlands.com.

State incentives should be offered to encourage people out of the informal economy, estimated to be worth £75 billion to GDP, according to government adviser the Small Business Council. It says an "even playing field" for businesses should be created even if there are initial compromises for informal sector firms. High street businesses were urged last week to ensure that they are accessible to people with disabilities in order to benefit from this group's spending power. Disabled people minister Maria Eagle said Britain's 10 million disabled people had £80 billion to spend each year. She said shops would benefit from carrying out the "reasonable physical adjustments" now required under the Disability Discrimination Act.

Transport schemes in England are to receive a £1.6 billion investment in 2005/06 to support growing local economies, transport secretary Alistair Darling announced last week. Plans to form a partnership that aims to boost Cumbria's economic prospects were approved by Cumbria County Council last week. The council will link up with the North-West Development Agency and economic regeneration board Cumbria Vision to ensure that the county's development methods and goals align with those of the North-West in general.
