Two planning applications for a retail development intended to help the regeneration of Cardigan will be submitted to the Welsh Development Agency next week. The proposed Pwllhai development from property firm Eatonfield Holdings would include a shopping centre with 5,000sq metres of retail space and 28 flats, and a 6,000sq metre supermarket.

Milton Keynes firms this week launched a new initiative to boost the construction sector in the city, which is due to double in size over the next 20 years. Called Go Build, the initiative is designed to raise the number of people working in construction in Milton Keynes from 2.5 per cent to above five per cent, the national average. The initiative is run by Milton Keynes marketing campaign Go Milton Keynes.

The Raploch Regeneration Partnership has launched a developer competition for the £100 million regeneration of the Raploch area of Stirling, which has been granted pilot urban regeneration company status. The regeneration of the Royal Arsenal, a former armament factory and prison in south-east London, is to act as a template for similar projects in Europe. The Sustainable Historic Arsenal Regeneration Partnership has been set up by government adviser English Heritage to offer help to some of Europe's arsenal and military heritage sites: the Battery in Tallin, Estonia; the Real Caranero Arsenal in Spain; and the Cottonera in Malta.

Developer Multiplex has bought Pillar Property's stake in one of London's biggest regeneration projects for £18.6 million. Multiplex has taken over as property firm Hammerson's partner in the joint venture company behind the 240ha Cricklewood regeneration project opposite the Brent Cross shopping centre in north London.
New award for old city,

A programme to restore the Old City in Jerusalem is one of the seven winners of the prestigious 2004 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. The architecture competition, awarded to building that recognises the aspirations of Islamic societies, is the most lucrative in the world, with a triennial prize fund of US$500,000. The Old City project, sponsored by the Swiss Welfare Association, involved the restor-ation of historic buildings, and finding innovative new uses for old buildings that otherwise would have faced an uncertain future. Other winners of the prize included the Biblioteca Alexandria in Egypt, the Al-Abbas Mosque in Asnaf, Yemen, the B2 House in Ayvacik, Turkey and the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
