Self-employment rose dramatically last year

Self-employment rose dramatically last year, government statistics revealed last week. The Office for National Statistics report shows that the number of self-employed people rose by 8.9 per cent to 282,000 in the year to September 2003. It says: "The increase was general, affecting men and women, full-time and part-time workers; it was also spread across all regions." Growth in Self-Employment in the UK is available at www.statistics.gov.uk.
A scheme to reduce discrimination

A scheme to reduce discrimination and disadvantage in the Welsh labour market is to receive £13 million, the Welsh Assembly announced last week. The Assembly said this second stage of funding for the European EQUAL programme will allow 17 strategic partnerships in Wales to look at ways to promote equal opportunities in the labour market and improve entrepreneurship among disadvantaged groups.

Project management consultancy Osprey Mott MacDonald is to provide planning supervisory services under a four-year agreement with London's Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine. The framework covers work on the college's campuses in London and the South East including Charing Cross, Hammersmith, Royal Brompton, St Mary's Campus Paddington, Chelsea and Westminster, Wye Campus, Ashford and Silwood Park, Ascot. The college is embarking on a major capital expenditure programme that includes laboratories and living areas for teachers and students.

Halcrow moves Peterborough office

Engineering and environmental consultancy Halcrow has moved its Peterborough office to larger premises in the city. The company has been in Peterborough since 1987 but has grown to a 64-strong staff providing a range of engineering and environmental consultancy advice to regional, national and international clients. Since the move, Halcrow has secured a contract with Peterborough City Council to look at the city's station quarter masterplan study.

RPS expands

RPS has expanded by acquiring two environmental and engineering consultancies. Kirk McClure Morton, based in Northern Ireland, was bought for £8.4 million. The company provides a range of management, environmental and engineering services in the built and natural environments. It employs around 140 staff based mainly in Belfast and will be integrated into RPS's business in Ireland. The firm has also expanded its presence in the Netherlands by taking over environmental engineering consultancy Ingenieursbureau BCC BV for £1.64 million. BCC has a strong presence in the water management sector. Based in Leerdam, east of Rotterdam, it will be integrated into RPS's business there.
