The focus of regeneration will in the future switch from inner-city areas to the suburbs, according to a report that predicts what Britain will be like in 20 years' time. The report, published last week by Building Futures - a joint initiative between government advisory body the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (Cabe) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) - claims that the revival of the cores of cities "will continue apace".

Overseas residents' visits to Wales rose by 3.8 per cent last year, outstripping the increase in the other home nations, according to official figures released last week. The Office for National Statistics data reveals that visits by overseas residents to England rose by 2.8 per cent, while those to Scotland fell by one per cent. Inward investment in the Black Country rose dramatically in the last six months, the local development agency announced last week. Black Country Investment said inward investment in the first six months of the 2004/05 financial year was £60 million, compared with £36 million for the whole of 2003/04.

The regional development agency for the North-East has signed an agreement with the Chinese government agency that promotes research. One North-East said that the memorandum with the Shanghai High-Tech Business Incubator Network will give North-East firms and universities prime access to Chinese markets in the fields of digital media, life sciences and nanotechnology.
