Burnley councillors vote to demolish 88 properties

Burnley councillors have voted to demolish 88 properties in Burnley Wood, South-West Burnley and Daneshouse as part of the Elevate housing market renewal programme. Following consultation, three quarters of residents agreed to the clearance proposals to reduce the potential for crime and anti-social behaviour. The cleared sites will be covered with soil and seeded with grass, pending future use.

Scottish Executive's housing agency hits targets

The Scottish Executive's housing and regeneration agency has hit all nine targets set by ministers for 2003/04. Publishing its annual report last week, Communities Scotland met or exceeded all the targets. More than 6,000 new or improved homes were delivered and the agency handed out £520 million in grants. Baron's Quay seeks partner

A development partner is being sought for a mixed-use project in Northwich, Cheshire. Northwich Vision, a seven-strong partnership that includes government canal body British Waterways, government regeneration agency English Partnerships and the Learning and Skills Council, this week invited expressions of interest for the 8ha plot at the Baron's Quay site in the area (above). Expressions of interest are invited by Vale Royal Borough Council by 29 October, said Northwich Vision.
Arndale consultation begins

Consultation on the potential to redevelop Eastbourne's Arndale shopping centre has begun. Eastbourne Borough Council started the process in response to public demand for improved shopping in the town centre. The work could lead to a multi-million pound redevelopment including a retail complex, jobs, housing and leisure facilities.
Housing body picked for Sheffield estate

The Government's regeneration agency and Sheffield City Council have chosen the Manchester Methodist Housing Group to take part in the redevelopment of Park Hill, a grade II listed housing estate.
Manchester mill complex to be renovated

A 200-year-old textile mill complex in Manchester is to be renovated in a joint venture between Inpartnership and the Burrell Company. The partnership won an international contest managed by urban regeneration company New East Manchester to develop the Murray's Mills site. A mix of 130 flats, business properties, live-work units, a hotel and a textile resource centre will be built around the restored canalfront to enhance Manchester's world heritage site bid.
Five developers shortlisted

Five developers have been shortlisted for a £300 million regeneration plan for Coventry. The bidders, chosen by a partnership of Coventry New Deal for Communities, Coventry City Council and Whitefriars Housing Association, are Lovells, Crest Nicholson, Taylor Woodrow, Bellway with Wates and Keepmoat with Westbury and George Wimpey. The chosen developer will regenerate parts of Wood End, Henley Green, Manor Farm and Deedmore with around 3,000 homes, a leisure centre, shops, community facilities, workshops, roads and a country park.
Scotland's canal network receives boost

Scotland's canal network has received a major investment boost in the country's latest budget. British Waterways will be given £31.2 million over the next three years for improvements, an increase of £6.8 million on the previous three-year period. The aim of the funding is to provide safe and secure infrastructure and to boost the local economy. Recent British Waterways projects include the Millennium Link, the Falkirk Wheel and improvements to the Caledonian Canal.
