Wembley complex to be created

An entertainment complex will be created at the new Wembley stadium after an an agreement was reached this week. Developer Quintain Estates has joined up with Caesars Entertainment Inc to build a 60,000m2 facility incorporating a casino, a luxury hotel and other leisure amenities. The plan is subject to reform of the UK's gambling laws and the granting of planning permission.

Plans to build a 26-turbine wind farm on Kent's Romney Marsh would harm protected bird species, wildlife protection organisations warned this week. At the opening of a public inquiry into energy company Npower Renewable's application to build the turbines near the village of Brookland, English Nature and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds claimed that the firm had been unable to show that its scheme would not harm nearby wildlife sites.

Rotunda tower plans approved

Plans to convert Birmingham's iconic 1960s Rotunda office tower into flats have been approved by the city council. Developer Urban Splash is proposing to turn the 22-storey grade II listed building, which overlooks the recently completed Bullring development, into 234 apartments. Birmingham-based practice Glenn Howells Architects designed the scheme, which features full-height glass cladding.

Obituary - John Sands

John Sands, former head of strategic planning at Swindon Borough Council, died last week. Since 2002, Sands had worked as planning officer for the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership. He held several senior planning positions, including head of planning and building control at Fareham Borough Council between 1993 and 1996. Sands, who was 54, leaves a widow and two daughters.
