Signs to discourage lane hogging placed

Signs to discourage middle lane hogging on motorways have been placed at key points around the network in a trial to educate drivers. The messages read: "Keep left unless overtaking" and "Don't hog the middle lane". The Highways Agency wants to encourage drivers to keep to the correct lane in an attempt to ease congestion and improve safety. It will measure people's reactions to the signs, located in the north and East Midlands on the M1, M6, M18 and M62. If successful, they will become permanent fixtures across the country.

Scotland's development under threat

Scotland's future economic and social development is under threat if the Scottish Executive fails to tackle the problem of inadequate water and drainage infrastructure, Homes for Scotland claimed this week. The industry body argued that every part of the country is affected by poor infrastructure, "blocking whole communities from development of any kind".

Community learning charity ContinYou to get funding

Community learning charity ContinYou is to get £250,000 to support out of school hours learning in Wales, Welsh education minister Jane Davidson said last week. Davidson said the funding for 2004/05 will pay for ContinYou to work in Wales with local education authorities, partners and schools.

Neck Building listing announced

Plans to list the Neck Building at Boscombe Pier in Dorset were announced by heritage minister Andrew McIntosh this week. The building, constructed in 1958-60, comprises four kiosks at esplanade level set at an angle on either side of the pier entrance under a concrete canopy. McIntosh commented: "The vivacity of this structure clearly illustrates the revitalisation of the British seaside resort in the 1950s."

Childcare facilities at projects in Northern Ireland

Childcare facilities at projects in Northern Ireland are to receive a funding boost, good causes distributor the Big Lottery Fund announced last week. Twelve projects will receive £865,000 to invest in new buildings and facilities as part of the latest round of the Fund's Building Quality Childcare Programme.

A one-stop shop to provide training

A one-stop shop set up to provide training for people in the Staffordshire community and voluntary sector was launched last week. Consortium Learnability is intended to offer skills and career opportunities for staff working for voluntary groups. Livingstone spearheads campaign

A campaign to encourage better use of roof space is being spearheaded by London mayor Ken Livingstone. A statement launched with Richard Rogers, the mayor's chief adviser on architecture and urbanism, argues that the Living Roofs campaign can deliver enhanced biodiversity, reduced flood risk through increased absorption of rainfall and keeping buildings cool during summer. But the statement warns that planning factors such as the overlooking of neighbouring properties work against roof developments.

Welsh voluntary and community groups will receive funding

Welsh voluntary and community groups will receive £3.4 million with the aim of improving their facilities and the activities they provide, the Welsh Assembly announced last week. The Assembly said the funding will go to 48 projects over next three years as part of the latest round of the Community Facilities and Activities programme. Spire secures planning permission

A 12m-high spire to sit above the £275 million Chapelfield shopping centre being developed by Land Lease has secured planning permission from Norwich City Council. The Spire has been designed by artist and sculptor Rob Olins.
