Salford to rebrand as Manchester Left Bank
15 October 2004
Civic chiefs this week pledged to push forward with plans to market Salford as Manchester's Left Bank following calls from experts for councils within northern conurbations to act for the greater good of their city region. Salford University's Centre for Sustainable Urban and Regional Futures (Surf) last week warned that the Northern Way economic development strategy could founder unless local authorities within each conurbation were given financial incentives to work together across local government boundaries (Regeneration & Renewal, 8 October, p1).

The work will also identify options for an area action plan that will then feed in to consultations on Lincoln's first local development framework.

Confessions of a serial bluffer
15 October 2004
It is with great regret that I inform you of the death of the French deconstructionist, Jacques Derrida. Through my tears I wonder whether a man who foresaw the 'death of the author' had been quite so prescient about his own demise. Just like whether Karen John really fancied me when I was a lumpy 17 and she was very hot. Indeed, I guess we'll never know.
The religious and secular divide
15 October 2004
Among those interested in building cohesive communities or promoting diversity, there is much talk of establishing 'common values'. It has been considered necessary to identify values about what it means to be British so that minority ethnic groups are clear about what they are meant to integrate into. I've come to the conclusion that this is futile. It is not common values that cause tension but contested ones.
