In brief: Policies in Southwark to be reviewed

Planning and regeneration policies in the London Borough of Southwark are to be reviewed by Lord Herman Ouseley, former executive chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality, at the request of the council. The review of the borough's equality and diversity framework follows allegations that failures in the planning department, which are under separate investigation, were racially motivated (Planning, 13 August, p4). Lord Ouseley's report will be considered by the council next year.

Economic development news brief: Lone parents in employment in UK has risen

The number of lone parents in employment in the UK has risen to 53 per cent since 1993, according to research published last week. The study conducted for the Department of Work and Pensions says that the chance of a lone parent entering work rose from around 12.5 to 15 per cent between 1993 and 2003, while the chances of a lone parent leaving a job fell from 13 to 9.5 per cent. In brief: Fresh approach developed by CPRE

A fresh approach to consulting communities about their landscapes is being developed by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE). Under its countryside character project, which is part-funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the CPRE will ask village residents to comment on what they value about their landscapes and how it should be protected and improved. These views will be drawn together to produce a community landscape character statement, which will be used to influence decisions about such areas. Pilot events are taking place in Lilleshall in Shropshire and Broughton in Hampshire.

Welsh Development Agency chair Roger Jones OBE has been reappointed to the post for a further year. He was due to retire at the end of the year but has been persuaded by Welsh Assembly Government minister for economic development and transport Andrew Davies to continue until the agency's merger into the Assembly in April, 2006.

The Home Office has launched a series of postcards giving crime prevention tips to the business community. The Putting Crime out of Business cards give firms advice on how to protect staff from violence, tackle anti-social behaviour, protect their stock and prevent fraud. In brief: Planning application submitted for Nottingham city centre

A planning application for a landmark Christian church and international conference centre on Talbot Street in Nottingham city centre has been submitted by AGP Architects and Turley Associates. The contemporary design of the proposal aims to be sympathetic to the Canning Circus conservation area. It includes an auditorium for up to 2,000 people and a 99m stainless steel coloured spire.

Business experts in Liverpool will be knocking on doors offering advice and support to people in deprived areas to help them overcome barriers to employment. The Streets Ahead team in the Kensington New Deal for Communities area will focus on the Fairfield and Holly Road neighbourhoods and target those whose disabilities, family commitments, lack of qualifications and lack of funding for travel prevent them from working.

A planning application for a major mixed-use development on land at Ilminster was submitted to South Somerset District Council this week. The application, submitted by Alder King on behalf of Horlicks Farms and Dairies Ltd, is for a 28ha business park alongside housing and public open space next to the junction of the A303 and A358. The scheme would provide headquarters for local company Gooch & Housego on a site previously used by a farm and dairy business. A masterplan for the development has been prepared by Bristol-based company Atkins Walters Webster.

The former head of British Airways has been appointed chair of tourism agency VisitBritain. Lord Marshall, who was chief executive of BA for 13 years until 1996, will succeed current VisitBritain chair Sir Michael Lickiss from January. VisitBritain was formed from the merger of the British Tourist Authority and the English Tourism Council in 2003.

In brief: Swing bridge given planning permission

A pedestrian swing bridge over the Stainforth and Keadby Canal in Thorne, South Yorkshire, has been granted planning permission by Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council. The bridge, designed by Broadway Malyan and Buro Happold, is sponsored by the Thorne and Moorends Regeneration Partnership. It will reinstate the link between two sides of the Thorne community. A previous swing bridge was replaced by a flyover for the A614, which proved unpopular with pedestrians.
